Costa de Cantabria

The Coast of Cantabria is one that you won't forget in a hurry; golden, sandy beaches and magnificent white cliffs line its shores with its villages and towns located right along the seafront. These distinguishing features make it one of the most picturesque areas in the region, as nature plays a main part in its breathtaking scenery and surroundings. A particularly interesting characteristic of this region is its many rivers which wind throughout the area from the shore, a unique aspect of this coast which differentiates it from others in Spain. The coast is recognised for its outstanding and varied nature and medley of rivers, mountains and coast creating a special landscape that you cannot find elsewhere.

The main areas along the coast include Comillas, Laredo and Santillana del Mar which are popular summer resorts, attracting thousands of visitors to the area each year. Santillana del Mar is of particular historical importance, a medieval town which is situated on the world-famous pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Comillas is a popular town famous for its art and history, home to impressive buildings designed by Antoni Gaudí and historical constructions, the area is also well known for its sandy beaches and coastal nature reserve. Laredo is one of the most popular resorts along the coast, home to one of the biggest and most beautiful beaches in the region; La Salvé. Like other towns in this area, Laredo is also know for its art and history, home to a wealth of cultural points of interest and historical attractions.

Beaches:

  • El Sardinero beach (Santander) - With its wide promenade and lighthouse this popular beach in Santander is equipped with everything you might need for a relaxing day at the beach.
  • Comillas beach (Comillas) - This beach at Comillas is very accessible as well as not being too far from the centre. At one end of the beach you can find a quaint fishing port as well as a great collection of shops and restaurants.
  • Oyambre beach (Valdáliga) - The perfect location for a day at the coast, a wide beach lined with restaurants, stalls and a golf course. The beach has a mountainous backdrop and is also located within the nature reserve.
  • La Salvé (Laredo) - One of the most popular and largest beaches along this strech of coastline and located in the town of Laredo, the perfect place for water sports and equipped with all the services you could possibly need.
  • Cuevas de Altamira/Altamira caves (Santillana del Mar) - Famous for its prehistoric rock art said to be around 14,000 years old.
