Costa Verde

Literally translated into English as the 'Green Coast', the Costa Verde is situated at the base of the Bay of Biscay in the northern region of Asturias and Cantabria in Spain. Its stunning coastline stretches the length of the Basque region until reaching France. The Costa Verde is sheltered by the Cantabrian Mountains, which provide the perfect backdrop to this beautiful stretch of coastline as well as offering a great opportunity for hiking. Rightly names the 'Green Coast', the area is abundant with lush vegetation and scenery which contrasts with the golden sand of its shores. The quality of the coasts vegetation is mainly owing to the areas particular climate which is typical of any resort fed off the northern Atlantic coast. Summers are mainly warm and dry however there can be rainy periods and these continue throughout the winter, however the result is beautiful.

Beaches:

  • San Pedro de la Ribera beach - One of the most popular golden sandy beaches amongst tourists in the area.
  • Cadavedo - This beach is equipped with everything you would need for a day of fun and relaxation on the black sands of Cadavedo. There is a lifeguard service and the views are incredible.
  • Playa Xago - Hidden away at the base of a mountain, this quiet beach can only be accessed on foot and is guaranteed to be a tranquil and relaxing spot to enjoy complete relaxation and admire your surroundings.
  • Cobijeru Beach - Another quiet beach hidden away from the crowds and reached only by foot. This is the perfect location for snorkelling or diving and there are many beautiful coves just waiting to be discovered and explored.
  • Bañugues - Neither an overcrowded beach nor a hidden haven of tranquillity, the Bañugues beach is the best possible location for families or those just after a relaxing afternoon of sunbathing. The water is shallow and perfect for paddling.

The Costa Verde lies in very close proximity to three of the most visited resorts in the Spanish North area including Santander and Gijón. The Basques cities of San Sebastián and the capital city of Bilbao is just a short ride away from Costa Verde. As a result, there are many things to see and do during you're visit to the Costa Verde without having to travel too far from the coastline. Noja is one of the most picturesque of its towns, quaint and traditional and bordering four impressive beaches; Joyel, Ris, Trengandin and Noja. The town attracts a large number of visitors mainly due to its beauty and culture.
Further from the coast is the capital city of Bilbao. If you're planning a daytrip away from the beach then this is definitely worth a visit. Not only does Bilbao radiate the typical bustling atmosphere of a city, but at the same time it radiates its traditional beauty and splendour. The city is also home to the world-famous Guggenheim art museum where many important collections are housed.
Picos de Europa National Park is also in close proximity to the coastline and is home to an array of picturesque mountains and breathtaking scenery. A visit to the national park is also the perfect opportunity for walking, cycling and hiking.
